Results in for 1st Annual Miles for Melanoma 5K/1MI Walk in Seattle!

Results are now in for the 1st Annual Miles for Melanoma 5K run and 1 mile run walk!

The race was held on July 14th in conjunction with the SDPA Summer Conference in Seattle, Washington.  SDPA members, friends of the the Melanoma Research Foundation (MRF), and others from Seattle took off from the start line at 6:30am.  The course was enjoyed at Myrtle Edwards / Olympic Sculpture Park.

In this above photo, the racers are taking off from the start line.  Runners and walkers enjoyed a waterfront view as they ran, even if it was a bit foggy in gorgeous Seattle.

Even more, by participating in this race, the SDPA and friends contributed to the Melanoma Research Foundation, as MRF works to Research, Advocate, and Educate about the dangers of Melanoma.

View results from the 5K run here (for SDPA) and here (for MRF and friends).

Did you know that the MRF has teamed up with Ironman triathalons throughout the USA to provide free melanoma screening for Ironman participants?  This is an amazing partnership, and they need our help to volunteer to help with these melanoma screenings.  At least 3 events remain between August and October.

The more PA volunteers we can get involved, more exposure we get and opportunities for educating people about dermatology PAs!

If you are interested in volunteering with MRF as an SDPA member at any of the following Ironman events, please contact Carolyn Edrington at

IRONMAN 70.3 Boulder. On Sunday, August 5, 2012 athletes will begin with a 1.2-mile, one-loop swim in the Boulder Reservoir followed by a 56-mile relatively flat bike course with slight inclines and descents. The 13.1-mile, two-loop course offers great views of the Rocky Mountains and allows spectators to cheer athletes on as they head to the finish line.
IRONMAN 70.3 Steelhead. The swim takes place in Southwestern Michigan near the shores of Lake Michigan on Sunday, August 19, 2012. The bike course takes athletes through northern Berrien and eastern Van Buren counties, known as the “fruit belt.” The race ends with a run through Harbor Shores’ Jack Nicklaus Golf Course and the Whirlpool Corporate campus, finishing at Jean Klock Park.

IRONMAN 70.3 Austin. Taking place in Austin, TX on Sunday, October 28, 2012. The one-loop freshwater swim is in Decker Lake. Athletes will enjoy the scenic one-loop bike course through rolling Texas farmland, sprawling ranches, cedar-covered vistas and sunflower fields. The run course will take athletes through Walter E. Long Park and along the shores of Decker Lake.
